Sean Silver is a scholar of the long eighteenth century and director of the Scarlet Letterpress at Rutgers University. He is the author of The Mind is a Collection (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015), a born-digital museum of eighteenth-century cognitive models. His current project, The Motley Emblem, aims to reconstruct the marbled page in Laurence Sterne's novel, Tristram Shandy, in order to recover the material history of an aesthetic experience, and the pyramid of people who were involved—some by choice, some by coercion—in the making of the "motley emblem."
