Dartmouth will host a symposium on Friday, Nov. 7, to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Budd Schulberg ’36, and celebrate the late novelist and screenwriter’s place in American culture, notes the Valley News. Among Schulberg’s many accomplishments, one of his best known is his Academy-Award winning screenplay for the 1954 film On the Waterfront.

The symposium, writes the newspaper, “will examine Schulberg’s complex legacy as a writer and social activist and include lectures on his work, reminiscences by family members and a screening of a documentary still in production, ‘Hollywood Renegade: Budd Schulberg,’ directed by his son Benn Schulberg.”

“(Schulberg) created a film that even people who don’t know much about film, know,” Mary Desjardins, an associate professor of film and media studies, tells the newspaper. Desjardins and Mark Williams, also an associate professor of film and media studies, organized the symposium.

The event, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at Loew Auditorium and Room 001 in the Black Family Visual Arts Center, is hosted by The Leslie Center, the College Library, the Jewish Studies Program, the African and African-American Studies Program, The Ethics Institute, the Department of Film and Media Studies, the Master of Arts and Liberal Studies program, and the history, English, religion, and German studies departments.
