Jain's extensive decade-long fieldwork at giant statue sites, coupled with her interviews she carried out with sculptors, patrons, and visitors, provides a nuanced understanding of how these public icons materialize in contemporary India and its diaspora. The discussion will center around the concept of emergence, rethinking key notions of the image and showcasing how new aesthetic forms entail a simultaneous religious and political retooling of the "infrastructures of the sensible." The book will be discussed by distinguished commentators Arjun Appadurai and Richard Davis.
