Program Details 

With the generous support of the Mellon Foundation, Dartmouth will be accepting applications for two postdoctoral fellowships in the humanities from Fall 2027 to the end of Spring 2029. These fellowships foster the academic careers of scholars who have recently received their Ph.D. degrees by permitting them to pursue their research while gaining mentored experience as teachers and members of the departments and/or programs in which they are housed. The program also benefits Dartmouth by complementing existing curricula with underrepresented fields.

For the current cycle of applications, we seek qualified candidates for placement in the following departments:

• The Italian section of the Department of French and Italian Studies, with transdisciplinary specialization in any of these fields: Black Italia; Mediterranean Studies; Sound Studies; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

• Department of Religion, with specialization in South Asian Religions, and whose work engages with karmic traditions (Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism). The department welcomes pre-modern as well as contemporary fields, as well as a variety of methodologies such as anthropological, historical, literary, or material religion.

The application period for 2027-29 Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows will open on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, and will close at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. 

Applications will be evaluated by the Leslie Center's Advisory Committee, in consultation with the appropriate Associate Deans of the Faculty for the Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, and International & Interdisciplinary Studies.

Timeline 

• September 16, 2026: Application period for 2027-29 Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships closes in Interfolio at midnight EST.
• September 2026 through March 2027: Evaluations
• March 2027: All candidates notified by email of the results of their candidacy.
