Professor Ana María Reyes will discuss decolonizing artistic creations as forms of historic reparations. She will discuss two dialogical processes and installations by Colombian artists - Liliana Angulo Cortés Un Caso de Reparación (2015) and Carlo Motta's The Columbus Assembly (2022) - that challenge the single-author or colonial authoritative stance and move us instead towards an understanding of power relations that are horizontal and inclusive. Decolonization involves ethical and creative challenges to official records, reconstructing histories that confront Eurocentric mythologies of universalism and superiority. Through critical and creative interventions with the archive's authority, its violence, and hegemonic historical mythologies, these artists open spaces to summon silenced voices, recuperate suppressed actors, and fill in glaring historical gaps.
