George G. Grabowicz, Dmytro Chyzhevs'kyj Professor of Ukrainian Literature in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University is author of books, essays, and editor of literary and scholarly magazines in Ukraine and the US. His lecture will address major issues in 19th and 20th century Ukrainian-Russian literary relations, the various official Russian attempts to ban Ukrainian literature, Stalinist repressions and socialist realism. Grabowicz will examine the work of Nikolai Gogol and Taras Shevchenko, Pavlo Tychyna and Mykola Khvylovyi. The talk will also offer highlights from the literature of independent, post-Soviet Ukraine.
