Energy humanities scholars have outlined how assumptions about energy presuppose a notion of the good life. Some believe these assumptions impede transition to a just renewable energy system. Energy ethics should contend with these background presumptions. Godoy examines the symbiotic relationship between fossil fuel epistemologies and ontologies, and their contradictory (neoliberal) notions of freedom. Can democratic theory help identify how alternative energy systems might support alternative, more robust notions of freedom?
