While on a study abroad program in São Paulo, Brazil, Dartmouth students co-wrote and published 10 semanas, 05 gringos, 92 coxinhas with the cartonera publisher Dulcineia Catadora. In this workshop, these students will share their experiences of producing the handmade book, and guide participants in a collective bookmaking project in the cartonera style using recycled cardboard, paint, and photocopies. Participants will engage creatively with language, memory, and book design, learning about a cultural practice of bookmaking that originated in Argentina after the 2001 economic crisis. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have produced a cartonera book to take home. Expect to learn, play, get creative, and have fun! Co-sponsored by Book Arts, the Library, the Guarini Institute, the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning, and the Department of Spanish & Portuguese.
