Dystopia Reading

Dystopia Reading: Suggestions from Director, Graziella Parati

George Orwell’s 1984 seems to be a very popular book right now, but it can only wet your appetite for dystopias. If you are interested in the genre, I would recommend Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men that describes Britain under a dictatorial regime that disseminate hatred for refugees. Good luck with your reading!

Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is a feminist nightmare. It tells of another authoritarian regime that controls and manipulates women’s bodies and reproductive ability.

Still, I am not done with suggestions: how about Aldous Huxley’s 1931 Brave New World. It describes another authoritarian regime that controls people by distributing soma, an  antidepressant and allucinogen.

Last but not least, William Gibson’s novels of the 80s and 90s introduce us to a society in which technology could solve many problems, but that is not in the interest of a small minority.

Enjoy the reading!
